Das „Comitê Popular do Rio – WM und Olympia”: Widerstand gegen das Vermächtnis der Ungleichheit bei sportlichen Großveranstaltugen in Rio de Janeiro (Carla Hirt)

Civil Resistance against the Legacy of Inequality of mega Sporting Events in Rio de Janeiro.

Rio de Janeiro is currently in a stage of urban restructuring which is justified by the realization of mega sporting events. In quite a short period of time the Panamerican Games 2007, the World Military Games 2011, the Confed Cup 2013, the World Championship 2014 and the Olympic Games 2016 are taking place in the city of Rio. The workshop is going to deal with the actions of the People’s Committee Rio – World Cup and Olympics facing these changes: Social movements, NGOs, academic institutions and directly affected people, who stand up against an excluding urban model, which is imposed on the city under the flagship of mega sporting events. The city of Rio that promotes itself as “Olympic City” is the same that removes 19.000 families from their homes, that uses public funds for the satisfaction of private interests, that rises the living expenses and incites social inequalities, that militarizes the city, that criminalizes poverty and that violently represses rallies against all that.

Rio de Janeiro befindet sich in einer Phase urbaner Restrukturierungen, die mit der Realisierung sportlicher Großveranstaltungen gerechtfertigt werden. Die Konzentration solcher Veranstaltungen innerhalb relativ kurzer Zeit ist enorm: Panamerikanische Spiele 2007, Militärweltspiele 2011, FIFA Confed-Cup 2013, Fußballweltmeisterschaft 2014 und Olympische Spiele 2016. Der Workshop wird die Aktionsweisen des „Comitê Popular do Rio - WM und Olympia“ angesichts dieser Veränderungen behandeln: Soziale Bewegungen, NGOs, akademische Institutionen und direkt Betroffene, die sich gegen ein von Exklusion geprägtes urbanes Modell wehren, das der Stadtgesellschaft unter dem Aushängeschild sportlicher Großveranstaltungen aufgezwungen werden soll. Das Rio, das sich als „Olympiastadt“ verkauft, ist die gleiche Stadt, die 19.000 Familien aus ihren Häusern vertreibt, öffentliche Gelder zur Begünstigung privater Interessen verwendet, die Lebenskosten erhöht und soziale Ungleichheiten verstärkt, Ausnahmegesetze im Sinne der FIFA und gegen die Interessen der Bevölkerung erlässt, die Stadt militarisiert, Armut kriminalisiert und Demonstrationen gegen all das gewaltsam unterdrückt.
