The Work of David Harvey. Urban Political Economy and Rebel Cities

The work of David Harvey is an important theoretical reference point for many academics and activists who deal with capitalist or neoliberal urban development from a critical perspective. It makes concrete relations analytically accessible with direct reference to Marx’s “Critique of Political Economy“ and asks for possible prospects for emancipatory politics. Against the background of the “urban roots” of the latest financial and economic crisis and the current dynamic of urban struggles the workshops aims to reconstruct central ideas and concepts of Harvey’s urban political economy and discuss his assessment of the political potential of „rebel cities“.

Das Werk von David Harvey ist ein wichtiger theoretischer Bezugspunkt für viele Wissenschaftlernnen und Aktivistnnen, die sich kritisch mit kapitalistischer bzw. neoliberaler Stadtentwicklung auseinandersetzen. Es macht konkrete Zusammenhänge in direktem Rückgriff auf die Marxsche „Kritik der Politischen Ökonomie“ analytisch zugänglich und fragt nach möglichen Perspektiven für emanzipatorische Politiken. Vor dem Hintergrund der „urbanen Wurzeln“ der jüngsten Finanz- und Wirtschaftskrise sowie der aktuellen Dynamik städtischer Kämpfe sollen im Workshop zentrale Begriffe und Konzepte von Harveys urbaner Politischer Ökonomie rekonstruiert und seine Einschätzung des politischen Potentials „rebellischer Städte“ diskutiert werden.
