Can we use Technology to reconnect Urban Life to ecological Reality? (Brett Scott)

Können wir Technologie nutzen um städtisches Leben mit der ökologischen Realität zu verbinden?

Für viele Menschen ist die Stadt ein Motor der Entfremdung, der sie von der Wirklichkeit des Öko- & Ernährungssystems sowie gesellschaftlichen Bindungen entfernt. Im städtischen Raum werden Konzepte zum Schutz des Ökosystems eher als abstraktes Ideal denn als Lebensgrundlage verstanden. Die städtische Mentalität der Ökonomie und Unverbundenheit wird auf die ökologische Welt übertragen. So werden urbane Märkte zum Model für "ökologische Märkte", als ob die gleichen Grundsätze für die Beziehung zwischen Mensch und Umwelt zu treffen würden. Daher brauchen wir Methoden und Technologien der Ent-Entfremdung und neue Möglichkeiten, Menschen wachzurütteln und ein Bewusstsein für die Existenz des Planeten zu schaffen. Im Workshop werden einerseits Technologien untersucht, die versuchen dies zu tun, wie z.B. erweiterte Wirklichkeits-Apps, das "Internet der Dinge" und andererseits neue Wege ergründet, die Geschichten hinter einzelnen Supermarktprodukten zu visualisieren. Bringt eure Ideen mit!

The city, for many, is an engine of alienation, distancing them from the reality of the ecological systems, food systems, and community ties that keep them alive. In the city, concepts like ‘protecting ecosystems’ become seen as an abstract ideal, rather than the basis of existence. Cities are also the headquarters of global finance, where professionals are making daily decisions about financing destructive projects in far-flung places. The financialised, disconnected mentality of the city easily slips into financialised, disconnected notions of the natural world. Urban marketplaces become models for thinking about ‘ecosystem markets’, as if the same principles that prevail in modern market exchange somehow apply to humans’ relationship with the entire planet. It’s in this context that we need methods and technologies of de-alienation, new ways of waking people up to the reality of planetary existence. In this talk, I will explore technologies that are seeking to do this, from augmented reality apps and the ‘internet-of-things’, to new ways of visualising the stories behind products that appear on supermarket shelves.
