(Re)appropriation Wars Instead of Star Wars: Commons Against the Empire
Within traditional leftist symbolism, the (classical: shining red) star shines the way to a classless society and simultaneously shows a ?better world?. Albeit, the path seems to continuously get longer; even if we believe ?another world is possible,? we are repeatedly confronted with the superiority of the horrible circumstances. Regardless of whether against the continuous curtailment of social rights, against advancing privatization, de-democratization and repression, against refugee control, human rights abuses, inequitable world trade and war; it is first and foremost the fight against social ills that moves us. The EU?s metaphorical starry sky - which ironically stands for ?perfection,? amongst other things ? primarily ?perfects? its empire through the creation of globally-acting police troops, a powerful grasp on natural resources, the plundering of lands in the global south, and mounting isolation from foreigners.
Therefore, at BUKO 33, we want to reach for the stars in two senses: On one hand, we are turning our gaze to perspectives and alternatives to capitalist utilization logic, or, more specifically, emancipatory commons, i.e. public resource, creation and preservation practices. Commons are not (only) the new stars on the leftist discursive horizon, but rather lived experience and tangible utopia. On the other hand, we want to make resistance and struggle against the seeming omnipotence of the EU visible and discuss strategies regarding how its hegemony can be combated and broken.
Reach for the Stars I: Building Commons
The privatization and misappropriation of resources and knowledge form the basis of capitalist public ownership. Increasingly, even the last restraints are being broken for market access to resources essential to human life, i.e. water and seeds. Historically as well as contemporarily, the enclosure of public resources and goods has not proceeding without opposition and resistance movements. For example, campaigns against the patenting of indigenous knowledge, against water privatization, and for the collective use of land are defensive fights concerning commons, or the disposition rights to public resources. At the same time, new commons are being formed predominately in the realms of knowledge and culture that continually create new methods of collective usage to counterbalance privatization attempts. Practices of collective self-administration, sharing, and giving are the lived realities of emancipated common resources. At BUKO, we will be asking about realized praxis and searching for ?peninsulas? of the good life: What do concrete and utopian practices of collective production and usage of resources, objects, knowledge, and spaces look like? What methods in the creation and preservation of commons already exist?
Reach for the Stars II: We in Europe ? the EU in the World
Frontex, the Treaty of Lisbon, and EU security architecture were some of the themes discussed at the BUKO 31 in Dortmund. Meanwhile, the Treaty of Lisbon has been adopted, Frontex has been further developed, and the elites of Europe continue to tinker with their security architecture.
However, on the other hand, knowledge regarding the EU, its functions, and dominions are incomplete, and the relations of the international, power-critical leftists to the EU remain unclear. Be it nuclear and labor market politics, internal safety, migration ?management,? or militarily accompanied foreign (trade) policy, self and external descriptions as a ?peace project,? ?normative power,? and a ?post-national configuration? can be discredited in every single area. Nevertheless, this critic all too often comes to standstill when compared to the EU-construed nation states. Possibly, we haven?t further developed our conceptions of a utopian "post-national configuration" from a bottom-up European to a bottom-up world perspective.
We will discuss the questions, amongst others, of how the EU internally and externally acts, how which groups in the global south and in Europe oppose EU policies, and what we can reciprocally learn from these struggles at BUKO 33.
At BUKO 33, we hope to advance a bit on the path to a "better world" and come a trifle closer to the stars. We will counteract global dispossession with collective appropriation and want to embark with you on the search for international, emancipatory alternatives and perspectives.
Zehn gute Gründe für einen BUKO in Tübingen
BUKO in Tübingen? Wo ist das denn? Das ist dort, wo sich Maultasch' und Kässpätzle gut's Nächtle sagen! Und dort, wo am Himmelfahrtswochenende 2010 das Herz der internationalistischen, feministischen, antikapitalistischen, antirassistischen, antinationalistischen, antifaschistischen - also linken - Bewegung in Deutschland schlagen wird: beim BUKO 33.
BUKO in Tübingen. Das ist erstens mal was anderes. Ein nicht im grauen Norden, sondern im sonnigen Süden - zwar noch nicht im globalen Süden, aber das kann ja noch kommen.
BUKO in Tübingen. Das ist zweitens eine supercoole Location. Kein kalter Uni-Zweckbau (wie sonst bei linken Kongressen), sondern eine ehemalige Brauerei, umgebaut zum soziokulturellen Zentrum "Sudhaus". Podiumsdiskussionen im Großen Saal. Workshops im Tanzstudio. Arbeitsgruppen in den Ateliers. Abhängen im Biergarten. Knutschen in der Obstwiese. Lagerfeuer!
BUKO in Tübingen. Das ist drittens ein grünes Biotop. Ein nettes Uni-Städtchen am Neckar, mit Schwänen und Stocherkähnen, mit Fachwerkhäusern und Taubentürmen, mit Eisdielen und Maultaschen-Restaurants. Der Oberbürgermeister ist (schwarz-)grün, die Gemeinderatsmehrheit "rot"-grün. Und der Leiter des Ordnungsamts kennt alle linken DemonstrantInnen mit Namen und ladungsfähiger Adresse.
BUKO in Tübingen. Das ist viertens ein schwarz-brauner Sumpf. Hier residiert der Grabert-Verlag, der bundesweit wichtigste geschichtsrevisionistische Buchverlag.Weitgehend unbehelligt, auch wenn die Antifa gelegentlich etwas einheizt. In den wimpelgeschmückten Schlösschen über dem Neckar saufen sich reaktionäre Burschenschafter um den Verstand. Und auf dem Stadtfriedhof ehrt man den Alt-Nazi und Alt-Bundeskanzler Kurt Georg Kiesinger.
BUKO in Tübingen. Das ist fünftens ein linkes Hochbürgle. Hier ist die Linke nicht so sektierer-isch zerstritten wie in der Großstadt. Hier entstand 2002 (nach ?Genua?) das bundesweit erste "social forum". Hier tobt jedes Jahr am 30. April eine Mayday-Parade. Hier gibt es seit 1974 einen Weltladen, seit 1979 einen Frauenbuchladen und seit 1995 ein Freies Radio. Hier gibt es Antifas, Schulstreikende, antirassistische Initiativen, Kommunikationsgueriller@s, Montagsdemos und vier BUKO-Mitgliedsgruppen. Und noch viel mehr!
BUKO in Tübingen. Da geht sechstens kulturell was. Im selbstverwalteten Jugendzentrum Epplehaus (besetzt 1972 nach einem Ton-Steine-Scherben-Konzert) geht jedes Wochenende der Punk ab. Am Wochenende nach dem BUKO steigt ein unabhängiges und untergründiges Medienfestival (für alle, die uns nach dem BUKO beim Aufräumen helfen und gleich dableiben wollen, siehe www.plattform-nobudget.de). Und im Juni rockt das Ract!-Festival, eines der bundesweit größten politischen Umsonst-und-Draußen-Festivals (die suchen noch Leute, die politische Workshops anbieten!).
BUKO in Tübingen. Hier ist siebtens die europäische Seifenblasen-Hauptstadt ? auch ohne BUKO. Hier ist der Sitz der Firma Pustefix.
BUKO in Tübingen. Das ist achtens Europa von oben und von unten. Hier war bis 1990 eine französische Garnison stationiert. Hier sammelten Linke schon vor 50 Jahren Geld für die algerische Unabhängigkeitsbewegung (Antikolonialismus muss praktisch werden!) und agitierten die französischen Soldaten. Mittlerweile sind die ehemaligen Kasernen-Areale zivilisiert und gelten europaweit als Musterbeispiele für nachhaltige Stadtentwicklung und politische Gründüngung. In Tübingen sitzt aber auch die Informationsstelle Militarisierung (IMI), eine der wichtigsten EU-kritischen Stimmen in Deutschland.
BUKO in Tübingen. Hier haben wir neuntens schon mal angefangen mit dem schönen Leben und mit den Commons. Es gibt Wohnprojekte (mit Hausbars!), zwei Wagenburgen (auf einem Platz!), einen Infoladen, einen Umsonstladen. Und seit zwei Jahren fordert eine Kampagne einen kostenfreien öffentlichen Nahverkehr: Mobilität ist ein Grundrecht!
BUKO in Tübingen. Das ist zehntens ein guter Ausgangspunkt für alle, die nach vier Tagen leidenschaftlicher Debatte, konstruktiver Vernetzung, direkter Aktion und fetter Party urlaubsreif sind. Von hier ist man in zwanzig Minuten auf der Schwäbischen Alb - und in sieben Stunden am Mittelmeer.
